Fiber Artists - Amigurumi...What?

Most people when they hear the word, "crochet" immediately think of blankets, hats, scarves, etc. The possibilities of creations for this craft are truly endless, but an uncommon term most are not familiar with when it comes to crochet is amigurumi. (a-mi-gu-ru-mi )

I began my journey with creating amigurumi products in 2021 knowing only the basics of crochet and having only made blankets in the past. I have since been able to create simple items such as heart keychains, all the way to more advanced creations such as dinosaurs, clowns, and dolls.

What is Amigurumi?

Amigurumi is a Japanese art consisting of crochet or knitting making stuffed creations; this could be in the form of dolls, animals, or food. In layman's terms, this tongue twister of a term can be easily described as 3D crochet creations, such as stuffed animals.

This unique form of crochet utilizes a pattern of basic stitches working in rounds, to increase and decrease size, to create wonderful pieces of art. Social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and Tik Tok have large crochet communities specifically designated to amigurumi and patterns range from beginner to advanced.

Where can I find Amigurumi Patterns?

If you are interested in learning how to create amigurumi items and need to know where to begin, there are many resources available with the technology around today. Free patterns and tutorials can be found on many websites, YouTube, and fiber artist blogs. Your local library may also have crochet books available to rent for more free amigurumi patterns.

Below are some links to my favorite resources to finding fun new free patterns to crochet. These links provide many different amigurumi patterns and often have tutorials along with them. These patterns can range from basic to advanced. Hobbii will even provide you the list with the exact items needed to crochet the pattern that you can purchase. For more advanced patterns, many patterns are for sale on Etsy, Ribblr, and Ravelry. It is important however to note that not all patterns purchased are good patterns. While crochet terms are very similar, some patterns may be written in English terms or UK terms which can have different meanings.

Before purchasing a pattern, I suggest reading the reviews left by fellow fiber artists to see if the pattern is worth the money and also to make sure the pattern is written in English and using the correct terms. There have been many times I have purchased a pattern only to have to convert the terms all into US terms.

As with any craft, it takes time, patience, and practice. Embrace the mistakes and learn from them and utilize the community and resources to be better.
